Bex Bird was a single mom of seven five years ago when she was rushed to the hospital on a Halloween night. Later, she was diagnosed with a deadly disease known as sepsis. She had to put a stop to her dream of building a tiny house and living on a rented piece of land until she was treated for her illness.

A breakdown of the relationship meant that Bird and her two youngest daughters had to downgrade from a house to a tiny rented piece of land in Cornwell. But, the mother had all the passion in the world for it, she dedicated numerous weeks to digging out and leveling the land where her tiny home was meant to sit, and she was all set to start designing it. 

Being Homeless And Broke

Being in a hospital bed did not allow her to do much. The place they were soon to call home was not even close to being completed, and she had to trust someone else to get the work done. She handed over every last penny she owned to a contractor who claimed that he’d have the home done and dusted for when she would be out of the hospital. To Bird’s fortune, the contractor ran away with the money, now, not only was she in the hospital with a chronic condition but also homeless and broke.

Building Her Dream Home

Five years into the future, Bex has successfully built the home of her dreams from scratch for herself and her children. A home that is off-grid and self-sufficient. Bex says that despite every difficult hurdle that she has come across in life and every trial that she has faced, she would never go back to her old life, and the life that she has created is the one that she will live forever.

The Yurt

Until last year, the family lived solely on candlelight because they had no electricity. However, now their entire home is powered with the help of solar panels, which makes it off-grid. Their house comprises a conservatory that makes up the diner-kitchen, a yurt where the entire family lounges as well as sleep, and a small hall that connects the two and also leads to the entrance. Their biggest luxury is having hot water, but they don't have a bathroom, which means they use the wilds around them for that.

Conclusion

Bex says that after she was betrayed by the contractor and left with nothing, despite all the difficulties with money and finance, her dream was brought back to life with the help of friends and family. She says that the process still was amazing, she contacted the off-grid community about her story, and they were just ready to help!
